Course Catalog Description:: Genetics is the application of abstractions to understand biological function. Much of our understanding at the molecular level of the natural world is derived from genetic work in model microbial systems like Escherichia coli, Salmonella, and Saccharomyces. Prokaryotic Genetics will focus on a molecular understanding of bacteria, with a smattering of archaea and phage genetics, covering both classic (transposons, mutant/suppressors) and modern (sequencing, metagenomics, synthetic biology) genetic approaches.
