Course Catalog Description:
Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, James Madison, Thomas Paine, George Washington, and John Adams on religion, faith, and religion in politics. Deism. Enlightenment-era discussions about rational religion. Rise of evangelicalism. Separation of church/state, framers' original intent for first amendment. Religious Right.
Class Description:
A heated debate rages in the U.S. today about the proper role of religion in American politics. In arguing about the appropriate relationship of church and state, contenders on all sides frequently support their claims with references to the framers of the U.S. Constitution. Some see these men as devout Christians intent on establishing a Christian Nation, while others view them as secularists focused on separating church and state. All sides use direct quotes to make their case. Who is right? The first half of this Historical Perspectives course explores how leading political figures wrote about religion during and after the framing of the U.S. Constitution. The second part of the course looks at major debates in the 20th and 21st centuries over teaching evolution, the sexual revolution, Supreme Court decisions, the rise of the Religious Right, political campaigns, and more.
