Course Catalog Description:: Careful study of chromatic harmonic practices (especially from the latter half of the nineteenth century) from both analytical and compositional perspectives. Students will analyze a wide range of music excerpts and movements using tools derived from Heinrich Schenker's analytical practice and will creatively harmonize sophisticated tonal melodies. The course also will incorporate readings from the analytical literature (both Schenkerian and non-Schenkerian) and will conclude with a substantial course paper.
