Class Description:
This course is an introduction to the area of phonetics and phonology. Have you ever wondered how sounds are articulated and perceived in various contexts? Have you wondered why some tongue twisters are harder to articulate than others, why certain lyrics are frequently misheard and why second language learners show particular areas of difficulties? In this class, we're going to investigate sound patterns in languages through frequent problem sets and reading of original articles in the field of phonetics and phonology. We'll play IPA bingo, read about expletive and diddly infixation in English, investigate child phonology and get familiar with various models of phonology including rule based phonology and a constrained based approach of Optimality Theory. This class is geared towards graduate students in linguistics and related fields and Honors undergraduate students. Others are encouraged to ask the instructor for permission.
