- Class Description:
- In this course we will survey several methods used in the classification of languages, examining genetic and typological classifications in greater depth. We will explore what each reveals about the relationships and range of variation found in the world's languages. The second half of the semester will survey representative languages and language families throughout the world, examining sample languages in greater depth for where they fit into the classification systems examined earlier. In each region studied, specific linguistic phenomena which are particularly well-developed in that region will be examined and compared, as appropriate, to related structures in languages known to class members. Students will investigate a language of their choice in some depth and present their findings in a final course project.
