Class Description:
In this course we will read substantial portions of Homer's Iliad in Greek as well as the whole in translation. The Iliad is the earliest of all Greek poems and was central to Greek thought throughout antiquity. We will read it with attention to questions of language and form (e.g., dialect, meter), composition and evolution of the text (elements of society and material culture taken from various time periods), ethics, religion, and interpretation. In addition to reading the Iliad itself in Greek and English, students will read various works of modern scholarship on the poem.
Who Should Take This Class?:
Graduate students with sufficient training in ancient Greek to read several hundred lines a week.
