CHN 3201 - Course catalog This is a beginning course in Chinese Calligraphy. No Chinese language background required. Chinese calligraphy can be traced back to some of the earliest marks made by carving on shells and stones. The recognizable brush form of calligraphy was developed about 2,000 years ago and is characterized by over 4,000 characters. More than simply written communication, Chinese calligraphy is an art form with specific tools, techniques, principles, and approaches. Lectures will introduce various Chinese calligraphy using brush techniques and expose students to the history and cultural background of this ancient technique. Students will be taught to develop a sense of self-cultivation by learning the Li script calligraphy. Through lecture, demonstration, and individual guidance, students will get hands-on experience to properly write Chinese characters, couplets and poems. Students will also have the opportunity to learn the meaning of characters in calligraphy. The textbook used for this course was written by the instructor.
