Course Catalog Description:
Introduction to historically informed anthropology of healing practice. Shift to biologically based medicine in Europe, colonialist dissemination of biomedicine, political/cultural collisions between biomedicine and "ethnomedicines," traffic of healing practices in a transnationalist world.
Class Description:
In this course we examine dynamic interrelationships among healing practices, especially the history and politics of influence, dissemination, opposition, and transformation. What are the political stakes involved in defining a healing practice as belonging to this or that group or place? How are healing practices embroiled in changing political circumstances? How is medical perception reshaped by historically contingent orientations toward language, social life and the body? How are illnesses and treatments reconfigured through colonial and postcolonial encounters, both violent and voluntary? How is medical thought and practice reinvented as it travels around the globe or encounters foreign medical traditions on its own turf? To explore questions like these we concentrate on ethnographic and historical writings primarily about three categories of healing practices:modern biologically based medicine (biomedicine), "classical" Asian medicine (specifically Ayurveda and Chinese medicine), and a variety of trance-based or"shamanic" healing practices. Designed for juniors and above.
