- From mascotry (that football team from Washington DC) to iconic superstars (like Jim Thorpe), to the recovery of traditional games and ceremonies (like lacrosse and indigenous Olympics), the topic of modern sports offers a compelling vehicle for understanding indigenous peoples - American Indians and Indigenous Peoples around the World - in rich and complex ways. This course uses a wide variety of subtopics in several disciplines (history, anthropology, film, literature) in modern sports in relation to questions of unequal relations of power to deepen our understanding of both sports and indigenous people-hood.
