Course Catalog Description:
Japanese performance traditions. Emphasizes noh, kabuki, and bunraku in their literary/cultural contexts. Relationship between these pre-modern traditions and modern theatrical forms (e.g., Takarazuka Revue).
Class Description:
Japanese theater has been enriched with its diverse traditions, ranging from the all-male kabuki theater (literally, "that which is queer, wacky, and crazy") to the all-female Takarazuka revue, and to internationally renowned Butoh, etc. This course will explore these various types of performing arts in various contexts (e.g., acting, training, script, and society). We will also learn how theater practitioners have contributed to the formation of such "philosophical" concepts as body, gender, knowledge, etc. Students are also encouraged to think creatively, such as connections between kabuki (pop culture born in the 17th century) and pop culture today (e.g., video game and anime). This course is open to anyone with an interest. No previous knowledge of Japanese studies or theater studies is required. No reading knowledge of Japanese is required; all of the readings will be available in English. Audio-visual materials will be used whenever available and appropriate. It fulfills the Liberal Education requirements of "Arts/Humanities" and "Writing Intensive."
