Class Notes:
This seminar will be on propositions. Propositions play a number of roles in philosophy of language and metaphysics: they are the meanings of sentences, the contents of beliefs, and the bearers of truth and falsity. This is a very broad characterization of propositions, which can be filled out and understood in different ways. On Fregean views (Frege, Plantinga, Merricks, King), propositions are representational entities that endow our sentences and beliefs with their representational features. On Russellian views (early Russell, Speaks, Richard), propositions are non-representational entities that are the objects of sentences and beliefs. On Classificatory views (Hanks, Soames, Stalnaker), propositions are classificatory devices used for individuating sentences, beliefs and other mental states. This seminar will be an extended examination and evaluation of these different conceptions of propositions.
Class Description:
This seminar will be on Ludwig Wittgenstein's early views about language, mind, and metaphysics. The central text will be the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, but we will also read some earlier texts ("Notes on Logic", the 1914-16 Notebooks, the Proto-Tractatus), and possibly some later ones. The focus will be on the primary texts, but we'll also read some of the secondary literature.
