Class Description:
Latin, the language of the ancient Romans, has served as a means of communication for well over two thousand years. Not only was Latin the primary language of the Romans, it was also an international language for centuries after Rome's fall, the ancestor of the Romance languages, and an important influence on English. The aim of Intensive Latin is to prepare you to read unadapted Latin texts by providing the solid grounding in Latin grammar and vocabulary, covering material usually taught over two semesters. With this foundation you will be able to read a wide range of ancient, medieval, and Renaissance authors, and you will have a basic grasp of an important predecessor for many languages spoken today. Prerequisites: Previous language experience in another foreign language is desirable since there is so much material to cover.
Who Should Take This Class?:
This course is intended for students with no prior Latin background. Knowledge of another foreign language and/or English grammar is preferred.

LAT 5001 will cover the fundamentals of Latin grammar and vocabulary in one semester. With the mastery of these basics, a student should be able to read unadapted Latin texts from a range of ancient, medieval, and Renaissance authors.
