Class Description:
Do you like short stories? Have you studied enough Italian to discuss and write about Italian short stories in Italian? Then this course is for you! Did you know the short story was actually invented in Italy, in the 1200s? And that it's related to gossip? Before Twitter: the Italian novella. This discussion course, conducted entirely in Italian, is an introduction to the historical, formal and theoretical study of the Italian novella genre (including such alternative forms as the "racconto") and the impact of this genre on world literature. This Italian genre shares some features with what English speakers call the "short story," but has different roots and a different character. Readings from and discussion of novellas and tales from: The Novellino, Boccaccio, Sacchetti, Bandello, Bigolini, Basile, Verga, Deledda, Moravia, Morante, Calvino, Ferrante, and selected contemporary writers. (This class carries a 4000-level number because, while it is designed for undergraduates who have completed Italian 3015 or equivalent, it is also open to graduate students.) Those minoring in Italian may write their exams and papers in English. All readings will be made available in English online by July 15 to help those who would like to know the plot before tackling the stories in Italian.
