Class Description:
We will focus on Deuteronomy's transformations of its narrative and legal sources in the Pentateuch, its relation to ancient Near Eastern law collections and treaties, the way it is itself transformed in the Holiness Code and the Temple Scroll from Qumran, its distinctive language, its ethical and legal values, and key issues in its textual criticism. Deuteronomy is a turning point in the literature and religion of ancient Israel and this will become an exciting point of study during the course.
