Pre-requisite: Fren 3015 Course fee: $1115.00 for required spring break trip (March 17th-23rd, 2019) This course has maximum enrollment of 16 students. Do you know that there are several Francophone communities within the United States? Would you be interested in visiting one of these communities and interacting with Louisiana French speakers? If yes, FREN 3650 Francophone Louisiana is an excellent class for you. The first weeks of the semester will focus on linguistic variation and specific particularities of Louisiana French lexicon, morphology, syntax, and phonology. Cultural units on a wide range of topics: Mardi Gras, immersion education, the United Houma Nation, music, etc. will follow. We will also have the opportunity to work extensively with Bec Doux (Louisiana French comic strip), and to develop research questions and interview protocol to be used with 5th grade French immersion students in Louisiana. A course highlight will be the spring break trip to Louisiana. The required course fee includes all meals, activities, transportation, and accommodation while on site in Louisiana. Some planned activities are a culinary workshop to make regional sweets, a visit to a French immersion school, a canoe outing among Spanish moss covered cypress trees, and a poetry workshop with local Louisiana French writers. Since a major trip objective is providing students an opportunity to develop speaking proficiency while in Louisiana, students will be expected to speak in French. Roundtrip airplane travel to/from Lafayette, Louisiana is not included in the course fee. Students will need to purchase their own tickets and arrive at the Lafayette, Louisiana airport on Sunday, March 17th by 4:00pm at the latest. Students can make return reservations any time on Saturday, March 23rd or later if they want to extend their trip on their own. The last night of lodging included in the course fee is Friday, March 22nd and the last meal is breakfast on Saturday, March 23r
