How do definitions of it differ over time and across cultures? How does literature play a role in the ways people see themselves and others? How do our histories - personal and cultural - determine how we read it? CSCL 1401W examines such questions in relation to larger patterns of culture and power. You'll emerge from the course with a solid sense of the differences among various genres, and the cultural contexts from which they arise - between an epic poem emerging from a Greek city state and a novel by a German civil servant, say. Small classes emphasize close reading, discussion, and practice in critical writing. An introductory course in every sense, it will give you a good sense of the field of Comparative Literature as well as reading and writing skills useful in many other courses and disciplines. In 1949, the social philosopher Theodor Adorno proclaimed that "the forms of art register the history of humanity with greater justice than historical documents." In a political era that thrives off of the documentary exposure of truth, from whistleblowing and fact-checking to iPhone videos of police brutality, such an insight has become incomprehensible to us. What could artistic form possibly know about the history of human suffering?


This course uses the bold claim that form allows us to understand something about humanity as an occasion for a unique critical engagement with literature. With the help of sociological and philosophical theories of modern life and consciousness, as well as several foundational texts of modern literary theory, we will practice methods of reading literature in a variety of formal media (essays, short stories, poetry) with the aim of understanding how literary form can function as a medium with which to reflect on a number of questions that haunt contemporary social reality: the difficulty of obtaining objective truth in the face of media of manipulation; the lifelessness of experience in a totally rationalized world; new forms of political apathy that arise under neoliberal capitalist production; and the commodification of communication on social media. Students will emerge from the course with an enriched understanding of the complexities modern life as well as a keen eye for observing the way in which these complexities are reflected and challenged through literary form.
