Course Catalog Description:: Introduction to literature across time, national boundaries. Basic genres, including poetry, novel, drama, historical/philosophical writing. Key questions: What is literature? What forms does it take? Why does literature matter?
Class Description:: This course will consider literature and literary interpretation, with particular attention given to answering the following questions: how does literature work? how might literature offer a different way of thinking than might be found in other disciplines? what can literature tell us about ourselves and about the world? The course will also examine functions often attributed to literature (reflection, revision, revolution) and how literary interpretation itself functions as a powerful and meaningful activity that views the past through the lens of the present.
