Course Catalog Description:: Representation and involvement of various ethnic groups (e.g., African-Americans, Native Americans in United States and Canada, Maori, Turks in Europe) in radio, TV, cable, Internet. Roles of government, industry, public organizations, and minority groups in regulating, managing, and financing ethnic media activities.
Class Description:: This course offers an interdisciplinary exploration of the concept of ethnic and racial identities (social identities that are cross-cut by gender, class, nationality, etc.), focusing on the ways that electronic media help shape, and are shaped by ethnicity/race. We will trace how identity categories (themselves always unstable) intersect and change over time and across nations, borders, and individuals. Course readings and discussions will examine a variety of media texts, including film, television, sport and the Internet.
