Class Notes:
To examine the lives of transgender Latina immigrants (TransLatinas) is to engage in the study of borders. This class interrogates how geographic, gendered, and legal borders are arranged to establish "normalcy" and impact the lives of those who transgress these state-sanctioned lines. Borders, the way they are erected, maintained, condemned, crossed, and subverted are of utmost importance in our study. Our task is to seek knowledge about how these borders impact transgender Latina immigrants in present-day U.S society. We will ask: what happens to Chicana/o and Latina/o Studies and practice when we center the lives of transgender Latina immigrants in the U.S.? How does this academic practice shape the way we analyze the power of immigration policy, biological determinism, and nativism in our lives? Drawing from Chicana/o/Latina/o Studies, transgender studies, women of color feminism, and sociology of labor migration, this course will use an interdisciplinary approach to critically examine the lives of transgender Latina immigrants in the U.S. The course will analyze the impacts of institutionalized violence on transgender Latina Immigrants, and the various ways in which transgender Latina immigrants contest the multiple outcomes of this violence.

Class Notes:
This course examines the production, representations, and cultural meaning of the Latino and Chicano culture in photography. This course is not intended to be a study of photography methods nor film techniques. The course will provide an overview of the lack of representation and distortion of the Latinx persona in photography throughout history. Through a cultural framework, we will explore how the absent narratives and depictions with misrepresentations in images reflect and contribute to negative societal constructions and ideological ramifications. Through theories drawn from cultural studies, visual culture studies, critical race theory, borderlands theory, the class will examine the role of Chicano, Mexican, Latin American and Latinx photographers in contributing to the construction and depiction of identity through imagery. This will entail a critical analysis of identity formation through transnational intersections. The focus will be on the representation of identity and race by Latinx and Latin American photographers including Flor Garduņo, Luis Gonzales Palma, Graciela Iturbide, Enrique Metinides, Ana Casas, Martin Chambi and Laura Aguilar. This is an upper-level inter-disciplinary course that draws on reading and writing requirements. In addition, students will be expected to collaborate to create an advertisement of a Chicana/o-Latina/o cultural event, as well as attend and review an event, performance, or exhibition. Assessment will be on classroom participation in discussions, on several short in-class and take-home assignments, and a strong emphasis on collaborative assignments
