In this class, students will learn the basic skills of 3D computer modeling and digital fabrication to generate objects using the Department of Art's 3D Printers, 3-axis CNC Router and Laser Cutter. Instruction includes computer modeling in Adobe Illustrator and Rhino, transfer of files and object fabrication.

In this class, students will learn the basic skills of 3D computer modeling and digital fabrication to generate objects using the Department of Art's 3D Printers, 3-axis CNC Router and Laser Cutter. Instruction includes computer modeling in Adobe Illustrator and Rhino, transfer of files and object fabrication.
Learning Objectives:

The objectives of this course are:

  1. To get a basic understanding of Adobe Illustrator as a tool in the creation of vector files for the laser cutter

  2. To get a basic understanding of Rhino as a tool for 2D drafting and 3D modeling for the CNC router

  3. To get a basic understanding of RhinoCAM as a means of toolpathing parts for CNC router fabrication

  4. To explore the prototyping process as a way to get to a final 2D or 3D outcome

  5. To experiment with merging digital and traditional artistic disciplines

  6. To gain an understanding of computer modeling and digital fabrication processes
