Course Catalog Description:: Major monuments of painting/sculpture in Western Europe, 1400-1600. Close reading of individual works in historical context. Influence of patrons. Major social/political changes such as Renaissance humanism, Protestant Reformation, market economy.
Class Description:: This course focuses on the major artists and monuments of the Renaissance in Europe. Students will explore ways in which the making and viewing of art works was shaped by social and cultural contexts such as Renaissance Humanism, the Protestant Reformation, the Counter-Reformation, and the emergence of a market economy. Students also explore the relationships between artistic creation and other spheres of life in the Renaissance, including literature, science, and politics. The course teaches basic art-historical skills of analyzing and writing about works of art.
