Class Notes:
Art and anthropology have often been thought together. Both concern the techniques with which people inspire and animate the world. The inspired and animated world makes us wonder, "How did it get there?" The goal of this class is to put its participants on a path towards asking such a question. We will attempt this by sampling how others have done it - in art, in ritual, and in religion. The operating assumption of this class is that there are universal characteristics in such "artistic" techniques across time and place. We will collectively try to divine those characteristics, towards the ultimate goal of appropriating them for ourselves.
