Class Notes:
Class held at Minnesota Historical Society. The "History Museum Fellows Program" is designed to engage students in studying the challenges related to the under-representation of communities of color and American Indian Nations in historical organizations and public history graduate programs. Since cultural organizations tend to be representative of the social structures and political traditions of the groups who created them, it can take a determined effort to make their staff, programs and collections more reflective of minority populations. Many students from the communities that are underrepresented are not aware of the career paths and opportunities in museums or as public historians. This program seeks to introduce the participants to the many different functions of historical organizations and the many different career opportunities that are available within these institutions. While class sessions will give students a philosophical understanding of museum practice, a summer internship at the Minnesota Historical Society will provide practical experience inside the workings of a major state historical organization.
