Course Catalog Description:: In-depth reading, analysis, and discussion of classical Hebrew texts. Grammar, syntax. Introduction to text-criticism, history of scholarship, and scholarly tools. Format varies between survey of themes (e.g., law, wisdom, poetry) and extended concentration upon specific classical texts.

Class Description:: We will focus on Deuteronomy's transformations of its narrative and legal sources in the Pentateuch, its relation to ancient Near Eastern law collections and treaties, the way it is itself transformed in the Holiness Code and the Temple Scroll from Qumran, its distinctive language, its ethical and legal values, and key issues in its textual criticism. Deuteronomy is a turning point in the literature and religion of ancient Israel and this will become an exciting point of study during the course.
Who Should Take This Class?:: As an advanced course in Biblical Hebrew, there is a prerequisite of two years of previous academic study (corresponding to completion of HEBR 3102/4107). Consult instructor with any quesions.
