Class Description:
This is an historical survey of the development of Russian literature from its origins in the tenth century until the onset of the most celebrated period in Russian literary history, that of Realism, in the middle of the 19th century. The course consists of a combination of lecture and class discussions. Students will read a representative sampling of works from various periods. These will include selections from Old Russian Literature (chronicle accounts, hagiographic works, "The Life of Archpriest Avvakkum", and others) and from the literature of the 18th century (selections from Karamzin). Approximately two-thirds of the course will be devoted to the literature of the first half of the 19th century. Students will read works by Pushkin, Gogol, Dostoevsky, and Turgenev. All told, required reading amounts to approximately 500-600 pages. Grades in this course are based upon performance on the three required 5-8 page essays and on contributions to class discussion. and, for students in Russ 5421 only, on the quality of the term paper. The term paper is NOT required for those enrolled in Russian 3421. See the course URL for more details.
