Class Notes:
This seminar will be concerned with the phenomenon of indeterminacy - cases in which there is simply no fact of the matter. Borderline cases of vague predicates provide paradigm examples of indeterminacy. But there are plenty of other (putative) examples across a wide range of subject matter including personal identity, reference, translation, moral responsibility, causation, and quantum superposition. Questions to be addressed in the seminar include: What is the source of indeterminacy? Specifically, is it a product of how we represent the world or an objective feature of the world itself? What sorts of revisions to classical logic and semantics (if any) are required to accommodate indeterminacy in our language? Are there different types of indeterminacy? What is the relationship between vagueness and indeterminacy? Can indeterminacy be reduced or analyzed in more fundamental terms? How does indeterminacy relate to various theories of truth and representation? Is the very idea of indeterminacy somehow confused or incoherent?
