- Class Notes:
- This course will investigate the historical and theoretical study of musical meaning, particularly the semantic and syntactic units perceptible within the sonorous surface of music. Although the course begins with early humanist and Enlightenment-era efforts to decode rhetorical and narrative meaning in musical forms, we will focus on developments in musical analysis and theory within the last thirty years. Various subdisciplines will be explored, such as topic theory, semiotics, critical theory, critical musicology, film studies, popular music studies, sound studies, evolutionary anthropology, and ethnomusicology. Repertoire will focus on Western art music (mainly of the 18th and 19th centuries) but will also include popular musics (particularly film music) to some degree.
