Course Catalog Description:: This seminar explores herding societies found throughout the premodern and modern world, from the Andes to the Sahara to North America, the Middle East, and Inner Asia. In this course, students will learn the key approaches to thinking about herding peoples and their forms of subsistence as well as the ways in which they interacted with their natural environment and sedentary societies. By focusing on herders' adaptation strategies to different climatic and environmental conditions, the we will explore how these conditions determined the level of their interaction/relationship with domesticated and non-domesticated animals. We will also examine the cultural identities emerging as a result of interdependency between people and their animals.
