- Class Description:
- This class will study of the Greek Old Testament involving specialized study of the koine dialect as used by the ancient Jewish translators of Hebrew Scriptures into the Greek of the Hellenistic Age (ca. 330-30 BCE). In this course students will gain or improve their ability to locate linguistic data and use this information to construct plausible readings of the translators' techniques and ideological intentions. What factors were involved in the cultural confrontations and accommodations located at the heart of translating one's own sacred literature into the new world language of one's conquerors?
