Course Catalog Description:
A selective examination of works of art produced in China, Korea and Japan from the neolithic era to modern times. Nearly every major type of object and all major styles are represented.
Class Description:
This interdisciplinary course of art history and archaeology will provide a broad overview of East Asian civilizations across wide regional and temporal boundaries from the Neolithic period to the twentieth century CE. With focus on China and certain attention to Japan and Korea, this course always encourages students to look for artistic differences as well as interregional artistic flows. The interplay of various ideas and styles in pottery, jade, metalwork, sculpture, painting, calligraphy, and architecture will reveal a subtle process of transmission, appropriation, and localization of artistic fashions and traditions through time and space.
Who Should Take This Class?:
Any students who are interested in East Asian art and archaeology
Learning Objectives:

East Asia, consisting principally of three major modern nation states of China, Korea, and Japan, is situated on a farther edge of the Eurasian continent, but its long, populous, and diverse tradition makes it nothing but a small world in its own right. Also, historical experience of East Asia is closely knitted together with the rest of the whole world. On these accounts, study of East Asia is significantly suitable for the Global Perspectives Theme for the Liberal Education curriculum; through intensive exposure to this peculiar region of the world, students will be presented with opportunities to consider the global implications on both micro- and macro-scales.
