- Class Description:
- This course provides graduate students with an overview of issues relevant to multicultural theory, research, and practice. Consistent with the nature of cultural and cross-cultural perspectives on psychology, this course draws from multiple sub-disciplines of psychology: counseling, clinical, developmental, social, personality, vocational, community, and prevention science, as well as a bit of sociology, feminist theory, and anthropology. A major focus of the seminar will be on what these different perspectives bring to bear on issues relevant to the field of counseling psychology. The readings and discussion will highlight both similarities and differences in the experiences of people from diverse cultural backgrounds. Through this course, students should gain a firm understanding of the major theoretical, methodological, and conceptual issues pertinent to multicultural psychology and, by extension, psychology broadly.
