- Class Notes:
- Analogies between music and language are so commonly drawn as to have engendered the belief in many that music is, literally, a kind of language. This course will begin with a consideration of what it would entail to undertake a comparison of music and language which does more than just take note of superficial similarities. We will then move on to consider how the concept of understanding applies to music (if it applies at all). This is not a course that will rely heavily on reading, though appropriate references will be identified. Students will be asked to undertake projects relevant to the content of the course, though the net will be cast broadly; students will also be required to present their work to the class and to write it up in a paper that will determine the grade.
