Course Catalog Description:
Second of a two-semester course. European thought in its historical/cultural context. Emphasizes development of philosophical/scientific thought, its relation to thinking about the individual and the community. Readings are from original sources.
Class Description:
Sex, Death, and Opera: What are the ideas that have shaped our world today? How has the idea of the "person" historically been constrained by race, sex, and class? What is "civilization" and why have people cared about it? What is the relationship between thought and art? All this and more as tools to help us understand, navigate, and deconstruct the web of ideas that holds us.
