How did complex urban societies first develop? This course addresses this question in ten regions of the world, including Maya Mesoamerica, Inca South America, Sumerian Near East, Shang Civilization in East Asia and early Greece and Rome.

Class Description:
How did complex, urban societies first develop around the world? This course examines processes of change from early hunter-gatherer groups, through settled village farmers, to the rise of urban communities called civilizations. Comparison of processes in 10 regions of the world. Intended for all undergraduates.
