- By means of lectures, readings and discussions this course will examine the way in which Europe interacted with the world from 1500 to the present and in the process developed the concept of "western civilization". We shall examine the significant political, economic and social developments that shaped European society and the overseas expansions, encounters and exchanges that helped to create the notion of being "western". Although the framework of the course will be chronological, emphasis will be placed on the trends and movements that influenced people's lives and views. The course will also take into account the ways in which differences of religion, class, race, ethnicity and gender contributed to the development of this consciousness.
