- Class Description:
- Gender and Global Politics focuses on the shifting discourses and practices of gender and their interconnections with socioeconomic and political processes at multiple scales and locations. In seeking to understand the interconnectedness of the "global" and the "intimate," this course focuses on concepts such as structural and discursive violence, the problem of speaking for others, political and cultural economy, and intersectionality -- particularly the intertwined nature of gender, race, caste, class, sexuality, location, and nationhood -- as they emerge through the popular discourse, policy, and material and institutional practices that are simultaneously global and local. Such foci highlight the actions, rhetoric, and ideology of gender in a given location, as well as their reverberations in other places. An in-depth understanding of economic globalization and developmentalism, `third world? women and the politics of feminisms, violence and human rights, all serve to unpack the ways in which power and difference operate to create dynamic socio-political hierarchies and possibilities of justice.
