Course Catalog Description:: Urban climatology focuses on how cities modify the local environment. Initial focus is on urban energy balance as the basis of most urban-climate research. The course also explores how atmospheric composition, urban hydrology, and urban ecosystems affect the urban climate, and how urban climates are linked to regional and global climate change.
Class Description:: Urban climatology is a broad field that examines how cities modify their immediate - and possibly regional and global - environments. Human activities in cities alter atmospheric composition, change energy and water cycles, and modify urban ecosystems. In this course you'll learn how urbanization-induced changes these components of the urban environment interact with each other and with the urban climate. Over the course of the semester we will delve into some of the contemporary urban climatology research literature and make some of our own observations of the urban climate.
Who Should Take This Class?:: Students interested in environmental science, climate change, urban geography, landscape architecture, and/or the relationships between humans and the built environment.
Grading:: Midterm Exam 15%
Final Exam: 15%
Final Paper and presentation: 30% (total)
Short Projects: 30% (total)
Class discussion: 10% (total)

Class Format:: 75% Lecture, 25% discussion
