There are communities in the United States and in Canada outside of Quebec where French is still spoken today. What? There is part of France in North America where the euro is used? Are you sure? If you would like to learn more about these places, enroll in a class that is being offered for the first time at the University of Minnesota.
This course is an introduction to the different Francophone communities in North America. We will retrace the history of these communities in Canada, the United States, and Saint-Pierre et Miquelon (a French collectivité d'outre-mer), and examine the different manifestations of the Francophone cultures that developed: language, music, traditions, flags, cuisine, literature, and cinema. We will also explore the impact that these cultures exert on a region predominantly English speaking.
