Course Catalog Description:: Central role of vision/visuality in modernity. Modern age as scopic regime. Ways that ideas/ideologies of perception have shaped aesthetic experience within social existence.
Class Description:: This is a lecture-discussion class for advanced undergraduates and graduate students. Our goal will be to investigate the historical, social, and cultural implications of the terms "vision" and "visuality." Along the way, we will explore the role of perception in modern consciousness and, especially, the ideologies and institutions that structure our "ways of seeing" (a phrase made famous by the art historian, writer, and critic, John Berger). Our goal is to understand why modernity comes to be characterized as an "ocularcentric" or "scopic" regime.
We cannot hope to gain a comprehensive grasp of discourses relating to perception and consciousness in the space of a semester, so the objective of the course will be to lay the groundwork for thinking historically and philosophically about how and why vision comes to dominate a modern hierarchy of senses.

Exam Format:: Two papers; two short answers; two presentations
