Class Description:
Archaeologies of Power, Time, Memory and the Body in Ancient Iran. This course is a research seminar in ancient Iranian art and archaeology. The seminar will examine central problems in the art and archaeology of the great empires of Persia and the ancient Iranian world (Achaemenid, Seleucid, Arsacid and Sasanian empires) as well as certain breakaway regions or the interstices (Anatolia, the Caucasus, Central Asia) and the impact of ancient Iran on the wider ancient-early Medieval world. We will consider sites of major transdynastic importance and their development (e.g. Persepolis, Susa, Seleucia-Ctesiphon); 'institutions' (e.g. palace, paradise, city, sacred spaces; dynastic sanctuaries); media (rock reliefs/inscriptions, painting, coinage, seals and sealings etc.). The seminar will put the ancient material into dialog with select theoretical readings on such themes as power, time, memory, the body, although the focus will be on the ancient material/problems.
