Course Catalog Description:
Analysis of visual representations in fine arts and popular media, in context of social issues. Obscenity, censorship, democracy, technology, commerce, the museum, propaganda, social role of artist. Understanding the contemporary world through analysis of dominant aesthetic values.
Class Description:
The goal of this course is to introduce students to the critical analysis of visual representations, including both the fine arts and popular media, in the context of significant social and ethical issues in the contemporary world. It is not as concerned with the student's acquisition of a strictly defined knowledge of an historical period as it is with the student's increased capacity to think critically about works of art, art criticism, and the historical contexts in which they arise. By looking at arts controversies in the US, students are asked to inspect the sources of dominant cultural beliefs, and to gain a deeper understanding of their own cultural, political, and artistic values. It is primarily designed for students to learn about the current status of the arts and arts policy, i.e., the art world of which they are and will be citizens.
