- Class Notes:
- In this course, we focus on the new theories of knowledge, human nature, science, ethics, and politics developed during the 17th and 18th centuries through close, contextual readings of classic and forgotten works of the time period. Our considerations include works from philosophers such as Rene Descartes, Lady Elisabeth, Anton Wilhelm Amo, Baruch Spinoza, Anne Conway, Thomas Hobbes, Margaret Cavendish, John Locke, Catharine Trotter Cockburn, Isaac Newton, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, Mary Astell, David Hume, George Berkeley, Immanuel Kant, and Mary Shepherd. We aim to develop students' abilities to read complex texts, to write in various philosophical styles for different purposes, and to convince others of one's view with persuasive, effective argumentation.
