- Class Description:
- The first semester of Graduate Vocal Literature (MUS 5241) covers The German Lied and Spanish and Latin American Song, in both cases primarily focusing on the late 18th through mid-20th centuries. The second semester (MUS 5242) focuses on French Melodies and American Song, from the mid-19th to mid-20th centuries. The material is presented and explored with special focus on cultural context of each style and period. Students will make small lecture presentations, take notes, have exams, listen to recordings in class, and perform selected items of vocal literature. ** Two important texts are currently out-of-print. This means that the bookstore cannot order them for this course. I strongly suggest that you acquire at least the Fischer-Dieskau Book of Lieder, if not also the Cambridge Companion to the Lied, online from a site that deals used texts.
