Class Description:
This course will focus on the nature of the Roman comic plot and its characters as developed in the plays of Plautus and Terence. To this end, we will read several plays including Plautus' Pseudolus and Miles gloriosus and Terence's Eunuchus and Adelphoe. We'll also survey some of the major trends in the interpretation of the genre as well as the basic elements of comic language, meter, staging, and the relationship to Greek New Comedy. Each student will produce a substantial paper on one or more problems in Roman comedy.
