Course Catalog Description:: Understandings of law/property held by colonists, Indians. Conceptions of relationships among family, community, state held in colonial America; conceptions held today. Law of slavery in colonial era. American Revolution/Constitution. Law, industrialization. Legal legitimacy, federalism, Civil War as constitutional crisis.
Class Description:: Exploration of the relationship between law and culture with attention to such topics as democracy and the rule of law; crime and punishment; the law of slavery; the public-private distinction; Civil War and Reconstruction; industrialization; expansion of the federal administrative state; law and the human sciences; legal education and the role of the lawyer in public life.
