Course Catalog Description:: Critical issues relating to literature of Francophone world. Specific topics/texts vary.
Class Notes:: Course Title: The Mediterranean in the Global Era: Theory, Literature, Art Course Description: In this course, we will interrogate what the Mediterranean has come to mean in the global era. We will read theoretical, critical and philosophical texts that will help us to rethink this region in the context of heightened migrations and harshened anti-migration policies. We will also discuss how this region has been depicted by media coverage and political discourse. In addition, we will study literary, cinematic and artistic works that have appeared in various Mediterranean countries. We will specifically focus on clandestine crossings and how they have been represented in cultural productions from Europe, the Maghreb and sub-Saharan Africa. Furthermore, we will assess how recent events too have contributed to a remapping of the "Sea of the Middle" in the collective imagination. Our examination of this migratory pattern and its tragic death toll will inform our understanding of the maritime cemetery and its impact on the reshaping of local beliefs and practices, including haunting, mourning, burials and rituals. The seminar will be conducted in English.
