Course Catalog Description:: Issues relevant to cultures/societies of francophone Sub-Saharan Africa as reflected in literature, film, and cultural critique. prereq: 3101W

Class Description:: This course will focus primarily on the postcolonial francophone literature of Algeria. In other words, most of the texts we will examine form part of the Algerian literature written in French from the independence to the present day. In this class, we will study the works of important authors like Mohammed Dib and Leila Sebbar. We will discuss novels, short stories, plays, and poems, and will explore a variety of topics, ranging from childhood, gender and memory to war, racism and emigration. Secondary readings comprise essays in English and French. Graded assignments include a quiz, a midterm, an essay and a final paper. The class will be taught in French.
