Class Description:
This course will introduce the development of Christianity within its ancient political, social, religious and cultural contexts. We will focus on the first stories about Jesus as found in the canonical New Testament gospels as the first moments of forming a distinct "Christian" identity. If time allows, we will venture into the second century to trace how these stories play out in the development of early Christianity. We will do our best to stick to the ancient cultural moment when Christianity was born. This moment forms the foundation of subsequent forms of Christianity, including forms that exist today, but we will learn that the foundation is not the same as the final product.
Who Should Take This Class?:
Anyone with an interest in the New Testament stories about Jesus, in what ancient people thought about him, and in ancient Judaism and religion.
