Course Catalog Description:: Achievement/significance of Alfred Hitchcock. British/American periods of career, major films, television program. Biographical, historical, technological, industrial, aesthetic issues surrounding his achievement.
Class Description:: An exploration of Hitchcock's major thematic concerns (guilt, romantic obsession, the seductiveness of evil, the double), and technical virtuosity; the cult of horror and the thriller as genre; Hitchcock's significance as a cultural icon and as a figure in film history and theory. Films will be drawn from both the English and American periods and will include The Lodger, Blackmail, The 39 Steps, Shadow of a Doubt, Strangers on a Train; Psycho and Vertigo.

40% Reports/Papers Other Grading Information: Attendance and homework assignments mandatory, and may affect grade if not satisfactory.
