- Class Description:
- This course will explore American cultures and values through an examination of race/ethnic, gender, and class relations, cultural politics, and socio-economic inequality in the 21st century. We will focus on the transnational and heterogeneous histories and relationships among multiple communities such as African Americans, whites, Asian Americans, Latinos, and Native Americans. We will also focus on the workings and the changing cultural values of the U.S. by examining a variety of sites and situations such as the workplace and the economy, immigration, family, housing, incarceration, inequality, multiculturalism, and globalization. We will explore a variety of American identities, communities, and institutions as pivotal sites to understand contemporary socio-economic challenges. This course is interdisciplinary, as it draws from anthropology, ethnic studies, American Studies, sociology, urban and global studies,history, etc. This course is intended for undergraduate majors as well as non-majors.
